Some jerky manufacturers not only pack their tough, dry jerky with preservatives, chemicals, and nitrites, but they also have hidden sources of gluten that you may not be aware of. Even when looking at the back of a package of beef jerky, you may not be able to see a clear sign that the snack you’re holding on to contains gluten.


While it’s easy to spot ingredients like “flour,” “barley,” or “rye” and know to stay away, there are many substances that contain these gluten-packed ingredients without showing much sign of it. An ingredient like soy sauce may surprise you - it can include fermented wheat, which contains gluten. While not all soy sauce contains fermented wheat, many ingredient lists on food packaging won’t explain into further detail what the ingredient breakdown of their soy sauce is.


When it comes down to it, if you see the ingredient list of another jerky manufacturer and see “soy sauce” on the list, you may have a gluten-packed snack on your hands. That is, unless they are certified Gluten Free.
